kthehun89
Hey Guys, So I've been reefing for a good 4 years now, since senior year in HS. Now, finishing up college at UC San Diego, I've definitely made strides. I started with a 3g pico freshman year, and now I've upgraded 10 fold. Now, I'm currently putting all my effort into my 34g Solana. Here are the specs Hardware: Solana 34g Coralife Aqualight Pro 150w Phoenix 14k, 2x65w Actinic PC MP10 on 100% ReefCrest 150w heater 6" cheapo fan Autotopoff.com ATO with 5g reservoir with Kalk drip Reefkeeper Lite 1 -Heater set at 78. Fan set to turn on at 80* and off at 78* -MH on timer -PC Actinics on timer Calcium is kept up with kalk dripping. Tested every other week. 5g weekly, or more often pending feeding. Software: Upper portion will be SPS, while in the lower reaches, I plan on having a nice acan garden. I also am planning on having a nice plate in there. I'm gonna stick some of my rare zoas and palys in for filler. Current fish include a Ocellaris pair with RBTA, Sixline wrasse, pistol shrimp and yellow watchman. I feed every 3 or so days. My corals eat 3 cubs of mysis! I do alot of water changes as well as my heavy dosing regime. I lost my anemone but im not upset. It stinging my SPS was getting old real swift, but my clowns are notably devastated . I got like $1200 worth of acans (paid wayyyy less) from a friend who wanted to reboot his system, so they are kinda recovering. Some are starting to color up so i'm excited to see them at 100%. they are probably at an 85%, just minor things. I also have 2 apple scolies and some other nice LPS, and tons of chalices. Check it out. Dosing: I drip kalk from my ATO. I also dose vodka daily, and microbacter7 weekly. My rates are all very very low, but I did have little algae problem after losing my anemone (got chopped in the power head). I also dose CoralAmino and VitC for general coral look and health. this later dosing is relatively new on my system so we will be documenting the change. Upgrades in the future: I absolutely love my RKL, and I would like to get another PC-4 for added control. I am considering switching to a 24"TEK fixture as an upgrade. I'm in San Diego, so a chiller isnt really necessary as it rarely gets that hot, so no chiller is planned. I modded the stock skimmer pump by raising it up and replacing the impeller with mesh. It works pretty well, its not even loud. Current pic May FTS August 1, 2010 10/19/2010 60g UPGRADE 60g Cube, 24"x24"x24". Lights on at 9am, daylight on at 11am and off at 6, actinic off at 9pm. davidr2340
Sounds like a great set up! Welcome to the Solana club! Let's see some pics!!! Also, how is your skimmer now after the mods? Are they worth it? East to do? Thanks! Link to comment
cameron1
sounds like your coming on nano reef to distract you from studying for finals just like me Link to comment
kthehun89
Also, how is your skimmer now after the mods? Are they worth it? East to do? Definitely easy to do and worth it. What I did was cut out pizza-shaped slices to fit into the impeller's gaps. This has increased the amount of bubbles by a good bit, and has decreased their size. If you dont want to spend a $100+ on a new skimmer, then do this mod! Link to comment
Clavius85
Sounds like a nice setup. The Solana is an awesome tank. Link to comment

Rehype
Yes they are jumpers. A very active and beautiful fish. The males tend to dislike other planktivores.. at least IME. Link to comment
got2envy
Nice so far!! yes flashers and most wrasse are jumpers...I lost 2 to the carpet surf Link to comment

kthehun89
I relocated my Ocellaris pair with their rose BTA in today with my Crocea, Big Steve. Also threw my 6-line in with them (I acclimated of course). Almost all of my SPS are rescue pieces, as in they were looking pretty bad and I'm nursing them back. -Purple Digi -Sunset Monti -Green Slimer -Green Acro -Pink and green Acan Echinata -Mystery Encrusting monti Did the first set of mass testing today: PH - 8.0-8.3 Specific Gravity - 1.024 Temp - 79.3 Calcium - 450 Alkalinity - 8.5 Ammonia - 0 Nitrite - 0 Nitrate - 2.5 Phosphate- 0.9 ppm Everything looks so happy Link to comment

nano-mex
Nice set up, do you happen to have a pic of the Stock Skimmer w/ mesh mod? Link to comment
kthehun89
Nice set up, do you happen to have a pic of the Stock Skimmer w/ mesh mod? Its kind of a pain taking out the skimmer and the pump for it. Essentially what I did was glue sponge triangles in between each tooth on the impeller. Nothing real complicated. Paleoreef103
Tank is sweet. I'd say no to the extra wrasse in there. Chances are the sixline will bully it. I've had a sixline kill off a pseudochromis, a longnose hawk, and a striped blenny in a Finnex 30. Link to comment
kthehun89
haha I'm waiting for my SPS to grow in like your tank. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve tho lol Link to comment
