I searched but can't find any topics. I should know this but think it was part of my problems previously with my tanks and algae.....having the lights on too long each day. Is there a general rule of thumb for how long to have the lights on in the tank? I will have a 29g reef, softies, and fish. My lights are shot from previous so looking into T5's also. Suggestions for lighting and time frames needed and appreciated.

For me, I keep them on as long as possible while avoiding any sort of algae bloom. As I push 11 hours, I notice a greenish algae that coats individual pieces of sand, so I currently have just under 11 hours of actinics and around 10 hours of 10Ks with 4x24w T5s.

Yeah, I agree, 9-10 hours is what I run my lights on. Timers greatly help this schedule stay on track. ninja.gif

with an effective lighting system, all you need is 6-8hours of light. anything else is totally preference. if you get t-5's, make sure the bulbs have individual reflectors
