I am curious how many people really shield all new corals from their lights. This includes sps, lps, and softies. How puts in this much effort every single time?

I would screen when adding a new light to the tank because the corals would probably go into shock if the new light was a lot stronger. However when adding a new coral I take into consideration what lighting the coral was under when I purchased it.

If it's in low lighting I start it low. If it was in higher lighting I start mid way to higher up in the tank. I think what lighting the coral was acustomed to is probably more important.

I only acclimate SPS and sensitive LPS, and the occasional zoanthid I suspect is sensitive. Granted, my tank is "medium" light. The 4X24 Nova I have on my 25g has pitiful reflectors, so there's not much that can burn them in my tank. Chances are they are coming from under stronger lights than I'm putting them under.

Now, on my 20-long, I have a 4X24 with individual reflectors and that's a different story. It generally gets just soft corals, so I don't acclimate them, but if I were to put in SPS or light-sensitive LPS like euphyllias, I'd acclimate them.

I put in a GBTA in the 20 and didn't acclimate it since I knew the tank it came from had a bit more T5 lighting than my tank, so again, going from bright to "not as bright".

I don't screen the tank, but I do cut back the light cycle a few hours and leave the new coral on the bottom or off to the sides. I've had pretty good luck not burning much up doing this. I do find out what kind of light it came from and use overhangs and the like if it came from a low light tank.
