Hi guys, I was looking around at my lfs and found a snowflake eel and i would like to get one . I have found a lot of different opinions on if they are reef safe or not , and it is a little confusing to me. What is your opinion on tank size, reef safe, and sort of fish safe ? i havnt found much info on them on here, so i would like all help that you guys can give

A snowflake moray eel?!?
Definetly cool.... But you do realize they get kinda big? 36" isn't unheard of... I would not recommend them to be a reef-safe eel. They are predatory, so no fish or invertebrates. Plus they have huge teeth... I would avoid having it in a reef setting just to avoid having to put my hand in the tank so often. Your best bet would be to keep one in a decent sized specimen tank. They don't necessarily need tons of room tall-wise, but they need a lot of bottom area and rock to hide in. Otherwise they do pretty good in huge FOWLR's with other large fish. Anthony, you could probably have one in a 40br (36x18x16), but it would certainly be a species tank. It will most likely eat anything else you put in there. These eels start out as female invert eaters so while female they would be perfectly fine with fish but as they age they turn male and turn into fish eaters. So really you can only keep them with agressive fish that wouldnt be able to fit in their mouths. I've heard them kept with puffers, triggers, and lions.

Anytime. Do you still think you want one? A ghost eel might be a great alternative since they aren't as predatory.

A snowflake will not fit into the tanks listed in your signature.

However One of my clients have a 250 FOWLR with a snowflake eel, wolf eel and a bunch of puffers. pretty cool tank and surpising;y there are some golfball sized hermits that have managed to live -------------------- |

I think a cool tank would be an eel/mantis arena. Which one is the dominant species?

they're pricey, yeah. but if you want an eel in a small tank, you don't have many options.

So the 55 would be a species tank then? The bottom surface area of a 55 is pretty narrow and long. Probably enough room for a snowflake...hopefully.
Eels will destroy everything alive, so you will have sand, rocks, water, and eel. Sounds pretty boring to me. -------------------- |
