To preface this, I have a decent amount of reef experience I maintain a 75 gal mixed reef at my office, and have designed and built several large (75 to 180 gal) reef systems, including custom sumps.
My boss and I moved a new tank into his house to replace his 12 gal Aquapod. I got to take the Aquapod home, along with a ton of extra stuff. the tank has been established for a year, a lil neglected but in overall good shape. As it stands right now, heres what I have: Stock AP12: - 2" bed of live sand - 12 - 15 lbs of live rock - Clown - Furry Mushrooms 4 x ~2" - really iridescent green mushrooms - Misc Zoas - 1 green and 1 orange montipora - Big CUC, Blue Legs, Snail Etc, - Bumble Bee Snails - Pom-Pom Crab - White Crab with little black spots (Porcelain?) - All stock lighting and filtration - Korlia Nano Bag of random crap: - MaxiJet 1200 - Bag of filter floss - Kent Nano A&B - Test Kits - Filter Foam Sheets - 10 oz ChemiPure - Cleaning Stuff (scrapers etc.) I've been lurking here for about a year now and have already gained a ton of info here. Just looking for some more specific advice to the AP12. Which brings me to a couple of questions (I searched for a while, and could not come up with results that were specific to the Ap12): - I should be using the MJ1200 for the return right? - If I want to use the filter floss and chemipure, can i just swap it for the stock sponge, carbon, and ceramic rings, or do i need to do this slowly and over time? Can this all be in the first camber? (I want to use 2nd chamber for Chaeto with underwater light) Thats all i want to do for now as the tank needs a lot of clean-up and re-aquascaping. After that i would like to change the lighting to all LED and a few other mods. Any other input would be much appreciated. Dave This post has been edited by xformdave: Nov 3 2009, 11:00 PM |

I'd toss out the ceramic rings first thing. Chemi-Pure you'll want to put in the 2nd chamber, filter floss in the first chamber where the water overflows into. As for the pump, go with an MJ900. Less heat and closer to stock flow, though still a little more than stock. And keep an eye on the temps, Aquapods tend to run hot as far as the tank water temp is concerned. Good luck!! The AP12g was the first SW tank I owned. I loved mine but outgrew it in only 6 months!!

As of now i took out all the stock crap from the back of the tank put in the filter floss and chemipure. I took out the Korlia Nano and stock pump and am giving the MJ1200 a shot nothing has blow over yet and no sandstorms. This weekends plans include making a slide in acrylic piece to block off the lower intakes in chamber one, with some left over acrylic from a sump project. I also have to do a deep cleaning on this tank as it has hard green spot algae all along the sandbed and in various places on the display glass. Gonna redo the scape and clean up all the old shells and other junk on the sand bed.
Stuff thats coming, 2x of 5oz ChemiPure Elite (on sale at Drs F&S), New Thermometer (old one has had it), Nimble Nano cleaner. Stoked to get the nimble hopefully will make it easier to get down in there. I still need to get an InTank underwater light to make one of the back chambers a fuge (gonna take a handful of chaeto from my work fuge). I've been looking into a new heater too, the Viaaqua 50w looks pretty good. Any recommendations? Oh and eye candy from my 75. I'm gonna put up some before and afters from the 12 this weekend This post has been edited by xformdave: Nov 6 2009, 03:32 PM |

Are you going to do a media rack once you block off the lower intakes? That was very helpful with my AP12. You could order one from inTank (think there is an AP12 version) or make one yourself out of eggcrate. Good luck with the new tank!
Oh, I have had good luck Rena Smart Heaters. -------------------- My tank: greech's 40 Breeder
A good rule of the thumb is to get a spreadsheet and budget every possible thing you can think of, down to salt, test kits, etc. Multiply this number by 10. Once you have arrived at the new figure, then square it ...sowellj on RC |

I have an ap12 as well....love it. As far as the mj1200, it's not so much that the flow is an issue its the extra heat it throws off. I put in a mj 900 and my high temp issues are no longer. I run filter floss in chamber 1, Cheato with sub light in chamber 2 , chemipure elite in chamber 3 and pump in 4. Oh and my heater is in chamber 1 also.
-------------------- Aquapod 12g - 8lbs LR - 3" live sand - maxijet 900 -3 nassarius and 3 astrea - 2 blue legged hermits - pulsing zenia - zoa - many different color shrooms - 2 frags of red monti - large anchor hammer - 1 Duncan - 1 cleaner shrimp - 2 chitons - 1 Ora false perc - 1 ywg - gsp

Thats pretty much the same set up i was planning on. I'll see where my temps end up after a few days of running this setup. Just re-scaped and did a water change everything seems pretty happy these days. but only time will tell.
