There is a chance I could be getting a great deal on a BSJ (<$50) and I've always wanted one. However, I do not think my tank is suitable (but maybe it can be).

Tank is a 20gal long, 8 months old. According to the NR fish guide (beginners forum) a BSJ can be housed in 20gal, however LiveAquaria states a minimum of 30gals is needed. Not sure if this is a territorial or bioload issue. I can handle bioload (20gal + 10sump/fuge + AquaC Remora Skimmer + a few clams...). I have three fish right now, 2 clowns, and a green/red mandarin (which eats frozen of course), and a cleaner shrimp and emerald crab. The clowns have established themselves to be in one side of the tank, so as long as the BSJ stays on the other I think it'll be safe.

My tank does have a top (the back is partially exposed, but I can cover that up with gutter guard.

The biggest issue would be my sandbed, it is only 1-2" thick depending on where in the tank you look. I've heard you can overcome this with a "jawfish condo".

All suggestions and criticism welcome.

Go for it, the footprint of the 20l will allow you to still give your fish ample territory/swimming room.

Just build a cute pvc home....just make sure the mortgage payments are within the jawfishes budget..don't want him homeless happy.gif

Here's my 2 cents....... I have a bluespot jawfish and he's been with me for over 1 1/2 years. He is my favorite fish. They are very entertaining and have a ton of personality. Mine will even eat out of my hands!

To provide a "proper home" for him, I added more sand to my tank. I added another 1 1/2" on top of what I had. BTW, I had no problems with the tank when I did this. I also made sure that any large pieces of base rock was buried all the way to the bottom of the tank to eliminate any possibilities of rocks tumbling down once he started to burrow. After I brought him home, I buried a section of pvc (this was before the days of the condos). After I acclimated him, I took the bag he was in and took the bag and made sure the opening was next to the pvc. He immediately went in it. After a period of time however, my bluespot abandoned the pvc home and started to make his own burrows, it's their nature to do so. Yuor bluespot will probably end up with more than one burrow. Mine has 3 burrows and they are all connected by a tunnel sysytem he made. He pops in one and comes out another. You will also want to make sure you provide yours with plenty of live rock rubble, the more the better. I have provided mine with hadnfuls and in 15 minutes, he's used them all up. They use this to line their burrows with.

You'll also want to make sure your tank is covered, they are jumpers. I've found mine in the rear chambers of my all in one a few times..... scary to say the least.

The secret to keeping these beautiful fish is to make sure you get a healthy one to start out with. Make sure he wasn't collected by chemical methods, some collectors do this. Where ever you're getting yours from, make sure it is eating and find out what he's eating! Mine eats like a pig, frozen brine, loves PE mysis shrimp and will even eat flake food! Sorry for the long post, but if you meet their demands, they can be very rewarding!

The NR fish guide is more like guidelines, If you are talking about lgreens guide dont clutch it like a bible because there are many errors in the guide I have found.

--------------------
thrive (adjective) (throve,thriven, also thrived)
Very lively and profitable; blooming; a term often used by nubz looking for excuses on why they have something in their reef that does not belong there.
"The tangs in my 40 gallon are thriving", "All 13 fish in my pico throve until I forgot to feed them one day"
