Looks good DD, that leather coral is huge. Those clowns are very nice.

Thanks!

That leather shrinks to half it's size at night, and by mid-day, it's that big or bigger sometimes.

It was in it's small stage when I picked it out as my centerpiece.

I want to frag it, but I'm nervous (first coral cut)

Heres a couple simple videos:

Leather 2

LOL

Seeing that guy hack it apart makes me feel better. I just want to cut a chunk off mine and cultivate it for my next tank.

Thanks for the vids!

The bioballs can trapt detrius and other nutrients, thats why many people on here replace them with filter floss.

DD- The leather is hardy, it will probably look pissed for a couple hours after fragging but it will come back to itself in a few hours.

I am just using the stock lights 1 24w 10000K PC and 1 24w Actinic. I would like to upgrade to LED this summer, but I would like to see more results from the DIY people. Light production seems to be adequate with their setup, but I would like to see the effects on coral.

In place of the bioballs I put one unit of Chemipure, and about 4 inches of filter floss on top of that.

You don't HAVE to remove the bioballs. I left mine in for the better part of a month, and I actually think they helped my tank cycle faster. (although when I was removing them after, I removed too many at one time (I took out 10 the first time), and caused my tank to cycle again, losing a fish and a crab) I read in a thread later about this, and removed 2-3 at a time after that with each weekly water change till they are gone. The reason is you need to let your live rock catch up with the bacteria production to compensate for the missing bioballs. *you are effectively removing tons of surface area that the beneficial nitrifying bacteria grows on.

Somethings I would suggest if you do keep the bioballs.

1. Remove a few Bioballs, then put filter floss on top to catch the big particles.

or

2. Keep the stock carbon filter in chamber 1 or run a filter pad of some sort in it's place.

3. Rinse out the bioballs in your change water once a month. That should be sufficient to keep the detritus down.

Yeah, about once every couple of weeks, it gets pissed for a day and sloughs off because it's growing. I'm used to seeing it that way.

My concern is chemicals after the cut and putting it back in the tank. This is the only tank I have right now.

Someone said something about putting it in water in a pail for a while after...I'm not sure if they meant tank water, or fresh R/O water.

Fragged half of the Sinularia polydactyla (pink finger leather) yesterday.

I got 4 nice size frags (2-3 inches each) and strapped them to some LR rubbles.

I was a little worried as the parent is still a little moody, but seems to be doing better.

All the frags are opened up with full polyp extensions. At that rate, they should be attached in a week or so.

I bought and setup a little 3gal Pico for my frag tank/hospital. And had it cycle last month.

What does a frag like that go for? $20? $25?

Much better growth after sunpod. I don't know why they discontinued these.

Why did you upgrade to a Sunpod, if you only housing softies and leathers?

Are you planing to keep SPS in the near future?

Link to comment

I upgrade to the Sunpod for a couple of reasons:

1. I got a good deal on it.

2. I do intend to add some SPS or a clam at some point....maybe.

It's only a 70W version, so it's not overkill, and the corals I do have (zoas and such) have picked up color and growth tremendously.

First SPS (montipora capricornus).

Kind of exited. I've had it a couple weeks now, seems happy. Any tips on getting it to attach to the rock?
