I imagine that you still are going to purchase the tang and add it to your tank. If you do and add a picture to this site, I can post this, which will be fun and giggles will be had by all.

i like the dead shrimp cycle mainly because the live rock i have comes from local sources so there isnt enough die off to start a cycle, the bacteria on the live rock dies off if there is no amonia source for food for the good bacteria. thats why i think buying live rock from your local fish store from a tank without any other life in it is a bad idea. use a fish or shrimp with live rock, you will still have a cycle. you will have a small cycle every time you add a fish untill the bacteria equels out.

i hate using a damsel to cycle, not because it may hurt it. i hate doing it because i have to try to get the little bastard out when im done. give a damsel a piece of rock and you will never catch it. if you do use a fish to cycle you can drain the water down to make it easier. dead shrimp stink after about 6 hrs, so take it out before than. besides its easy to catch a dead shrimp.

avoid sally light foot crabs, mithrax are hit or miss, some say scarlet hermits are ok, but the best are the porcelain crabs laugh.gif *not a true crab* and reef safe, also pompom or boxer crabs are usu. safe too. Also a Blenny is always a great member of a cuc...and extremely entertaining

Blenny is 1983276872385764554444444265284764 times better than a crab.

Crabs are neat, just not in STD or reef tank form. mellow.gif

I do not doubt the validity of the pee in the tank method, mostly because I do not wish to test it personally.

Head over to reefcleaners.org and have John do a custom CUC for you. John and the reefcleaners crew are superhero's man. Healthy critters that won't eat your s**t. Plus he has neat stuff like chitons and planaxis.

(I am an unapologetic fan girl of John. Super smart super nice guy who isn't out to rob you or slaughter colonies of things to make a quick buck)

+1, I just got down with my cycle and am going to order another set of CUC from reefcleaners... Just give him the details on your tank and he`ll tell you everything you need.

If you don't want to get fancy that's the way to go...

If you want to get fancy, and get "good lucking CUC" look for snails over crabs. I found crabs to be a more of a nuisance than good.

Depends on the snail. He marks the item's that can't ship priority with a big * <-- its in red

Off the top of my head limpets, chitons, crabs, urchins and starfish can't be shipped priority. Most of the workin' snails can be though. smile.gif

Even if you ship express it's only like 26$ which is about half of what everyone else charges.

On the "damsel" front, it only sounds like a good idea because you are staring at an algae filled box of dirt and water laugh.gif It actually takes longer to get the bacteria you need using the fish, and the second you add your super cool *real* fish your tank is screwed because it doesn't have a filter sufficient for 2 fish, and you will have 2 fish. Catching a damsel is a Wile-E-Cayote/Roadrunner experience dry.gif. God put a NAS turbo on those little fish.

i second peeing in your tank... (make sure u eat healthy for at least a week before doing it)

i dont know why ppl are talking about cycling. it takes like 2 weeks or so. trying to speed the process up by any means will only cause negative effects. the ocean wasnt created in a day. let alone 2 weeks.
