Made a cover for the QT out of egg create today. Should hold everyone in, once there in that is Wishing your tank a quick recovery! Hey, you say you should fully cycle a QT before putting fish in...about how long does that take in a set-up like u have? It took my display tank 4-5 weeks to fully cycle and I wouldn't want to wait that long every time I set up te QT! Does it take less time because there is no rock and only like one little fish? Thanks. Not everyone cycles a QT due to time restraints. Some just use water from their DT and maybe a sponge from the filtration, add it to the QT and monitor ammonia and nitrites daily. I prefer to have a separate system and wait out the cycle, then I don't have to risk ammonia peaks and be changing water so often. I will try to make it as stress free as possible for the new fish. Also, I had red spot disease in my tank several months ago, no sign of it for 5 months but I am told this parasite can live without a host indefinitely in the aquarium. I didn't want to risk introducing it into the QT, unlikely it would be an issue, just playing it safe. Regardless, the fish will eventually be introduced to the DT with red spot disease, the difference is he will be strong and healthy by that time and unlikely to get the parasite. I use no rock in the QT, only Seachem Matrix in the filter as shown previously. If medications are used in QT, the rock or any substrate is virtually useless after, so I don't bother with it. I seed with bacteria and through some food in to get things started. I think I have a good two weeks, maybe more before this tank is ready. If I don't medicate in this QT I will likely keep it running or turn it into a coral QT, undecided. Regards, Christine Link to comment

I went with live rock in my quarantine but only because i had some disposable pieces laying around in my sump. I figure im going to just leave the QT running even when there arent any fish in it so its ready in case of an emergency like i had today.....my other clownfish started to show signs of brook so in qt he went. That works fine if you have rock to spare. Sorry to hear about your clown, nice to have the QT ready to go in cases like this as Brook kills fast, nice your on top of things. HaHa, okay you know I am a perfectionist with things, but this PVC needs some modification already, it needs a more stable base as the pump moves it around the tank. Gerrrrr. Stunning tank! How is that skimmer working out for you? I'm thinking about buying the same one for a 40B and Podpimp recommend it. Just trying to look around for other feedback. The Skimz 121 is not a bad buy for the money. Here's what I didn't like so much about it. The collection cup has no drain. One can be added with a slight mod. The pump is not the best, it made some rattling noise for some time, I took it apart and put it back together, then it was fine. The air muffle (whatever it is called) is of poor design, hard to tweak it just right, I have modified mine with a new valve. My next skimmer will be a Bubble King 160, quite a bit more but worth the $$ in the long run. I think Skimz has come out with a new line just this month, I have also heard the new design will be better. Hope this helps in your decision making. Link to comment

And, I may just copy it. Thanks all, no rocket science with this QT, about as simple as it gets. It has been very affordable to build since I had most of the equipment laying around already. I'm a fan girl, have been since she made that killer little skimmer which is now a bio pellet reactor. I'm absolutely in awe of the yellow acro, you got the most difficult color to pop! Thanks Kat The skimmer is still a skimmer, the bio-pellet reactor is a separate device BTW. The yellow acro is a new addition, I know, who buys acro mini colonies when their tank has AEFW's?....Answer...ME . I attribute the coloration mainly to ULNS more than Zeovit. Yes yellow is one of the hardest colours to keep, I bought it to help monitor my trace element and nutrient levels. I prefer it over test kits. If the yellow acro starts to deepen in colour or turn green, I know I have a problem. The picture was taken just after acclimation, in less than two weeks, the growth tips are really awesome on it. I think everyone who keeps SPS corals should have one yellow coral for this purpose Link to comment

I found purples are the most difficult to keep over the years. I had a purple samonesis colony for years that was my water indicator coral. This was the most sensitive coral in my tank. When ever color or polyp extension would change, there was something up with water quality. Link to comment

I'm a bit new to the Acro scene and I find using coral colors as water quality indicators very intriguing. I have a creamy yellow Granulosa that has developed a green sheen, so based on what you are indicating my nutrients are likely a bit too high even though NO3 and PO4 consistently read '0' (Salifert). I'm thinking that higher nutrient levels are also contributing to washed out colors in my Red Planet, but oddly, my green Milli has the same florescent green as on day one. Link to comment
