My Insatiable FLUVAL EDGE

Recommended Posts

I have been a member for almost a year and I started this tank in November 2010 but never got around creating a build thread for my tank. This is my first SW tank and I am really enjoying it. I would like to thank all the members who post on Fluval Edge tank thread and on this forum since their comments/inputs have helped me a lot. Here is the latest FTS. Please excuse the colors in the pictures as I am still trying to figure out how to take pictures under LED.

FTS - December

Equipment

Fluval Edge Tank

Nanocustoms 3.6 LED Fixture for Fluval Edge

Panorama 12 Module 3-453nm Blue/ 9-6500K White

Stock Filter AC20 with BRS carbon, GFO and filter floss

CoolWorks Ice Probe Chiller

MP10es

Rena SmartHeater Aquarium Heater, 50W

I use D-D H2Ocean Magnesium Pro PLUS Salt Mix

Livestock

Fish and Inverts

ORA Ocellaris

ORA Black Ocellaris

1 Blue Legged Hermit Crab

1 Red Legged Hermit Crab

Nassarius snail, Margarita snail, Trochus snail & dwarf cerith snails

1 Pom Pom Crab

1 Emrald crab

1 porcelain crab

The clownfish and most of the inverts except emrald crab have been in my tank for almost 10 months. I use to have a pair of peppermint shrimp and they lived for almost 5 months and then they both died on the same day.

Corals

Lavendar Mushrooms

Blue Mushrooms

GSP

Ricordeas Florida and Yuma

Tyree Toadstool and Long Polyp Toadstool

Zoanthids

Palythoas

Acanthastrea

Green nepthea

Frogspawn

Hammer

Duncan

Trumpet coral

Pink birdsnest

Green stylophora

Blastomussa

War coral

Mini Anemones

Galaxea (not a great choice for small tank like this as they have really long sweeper tentacles)

Most of the corals listed above were bought as small frags and now I have really nice colonies. The SPS growth is slow but I am fine with it. I do not dose anything in my tank and just do 30-40% weekly water changes. I had to go on a business trip for 4 months and the tank survived with just weekly water changes and feeding only the clownfish. There was no target feeding of corals during that time.

Fluval Edge is a tricky tank to work with but its a good starter tank. Due to limited space I did make use of the walls by using Frag Mags to mount my toadstool coral, GSP, Frogspawn and Hammer coral on the side and back walls. I think I am ready for an upgrade and my next tank would be an ELOS mini or midi tank.

Thanks JoelRHale & Savageajc. Yes the panorama was added for extra coverage. I think its not needed anymore but before I got my nano customs unit I only had the stock light arm with MR16 bulbs and panorama module and that worked pretty well.

some more pics....

Here is mushroom hosting my female clown. She was really small when I got her...probably around 1inch but now she is close to 2.5 inches and they only started hosting the mushroom few weeks ago even though the mushroom has been there for last 10 months

My beautiful Yuma which i got as a hitchhiker and now I have 3 other baby yumas

Magician Palys - got a frag with 4 polyps from LFS and they had lost their color. This is after 3 months and the picture doesn't do justice to their color.

Very nice, i hope one day my edge will be this nice. What color led strips did you go with for you nanotuners fixture? I have 50/50-blue-50/50

Thanks and i hope you enjoy your edge as much as I do.

I bought the nanotuners fixture second hand from one of the reefers on this forum and he had got it configured as follows

LED Strip 1 - 50/50

LED Strip 2 - Royal Blue

LED Strip 3 - 50/50

so stip 1 and strip 3 are on same dimmer and strip 2 is on a separate dimmer. This fixure does give out decent amount of heat which affects the water temp.

I never thought an edge could be a cool tank because most people who buy them end up scrapping the project because of its shortcomings

This is easily the most amazing edge i've ever seen, and just as a SW nano its great. Love the coverage the nanocustoms unit gives

Yes there are few shortcomings but if you just leave the corals in there and wait for them to grow without constantly moving them around then its an easy tank. The most difficult thing with this tank is to move things around as it has pretty small opening on the top.

Nanocustoms unit was a great investment. without it this tank would be just BLAH.

That is beautiful, I'm getting very tempted to get one of these Edge tanks as a second tank/quarantine tank.

I have always thought about having a second edge tank as a frag tank. You should wait as I just recently heard that they are coming out with new tanks with nice LED lighting option.

Have you found a good way to do an auto top off system?

No, as of now its manual and i don't think there is enough space to put one in.

gorgeous tank! Great job! :D

Thanks

Georgeous.

I love that cute little birdsnest!

Thanks...i love that birdsnest too....it absolutely loves the bright light. I am very tempted to get a small frag of ORA Bird of Paradise. I just need to find a nice cheap small frag.

Wow awesome tank! I am just cycling my first nano reef in an Edge now, and this is definitely an inspiration!

Do your clowns seem pretty comfortable in there? Enough room and such?

Great work!

Thanks. I think clowns are doing fine but I think that's the limit. I don't think you can add anything else. They grew quite a bit in first few months but now they are holding steady. Now that my mushroom has started hosting the clowns my clowns hardly move from there. They have also become very territorial and won't allow me to put any corals near the mushroom.

Good to know, I would like to do clowns in my nano, and was curious how they like it. Anyways, great tank, thanks for sharing!

Dipg lovin the tank!

I know in the OP you said you do not use any additives, but have you since of late? if so what?

Which corals are you target feeding? With what food?

Im using instant ocean salt (changing 1-2 gallons a week) and Tech CB Part A+B every two weeks

Any advice from a coral flourishing Edge owner would be well received! Thanks!

Thanks. I don't dose anything since I have read that there is no need to dose in a nano aquarium smaller than 10g if you do weekly water changes. I have used D-D H2Ocean Magnesium Pro PLUS Salt Mix from the beginning and change 2.5g water every week.
