Let there be Light: Part II

  • EcoTech Radion Install
  • EcoTech MP10ESw Upgrade

I did not purchase the premium hanging kit. I should have but after I put my stock order in the EcoTech it passed my mind. I like to tinker and came up with a simple solution that cost about $4.00.

I purchased a picture hanging kit at Menards for $2.00. The useful items it included were braided thin wire/rope and eyelet screws. I did need more drywall anchors since their design was improved this past year. Everything else was laying around my shop.

To crimp the wires I used 12 electrical connectors. Customized them by snipping off the actual connection ends only using the crimping area. I removed the plastic coverings on most of the build but did keep and paint them black closest to the light.

I used two rings that came off a hanging kit for a shop light.

Total time: 4 hrs

Most of it was making ideas in the head come to life and finding exact center and outset on the ceiling.

Also installed was a wireless MP10. Upgrade from my MP20

Thank you woot for the best item in a Bag of Crap. This came in so handy

Found center point with a makshift plumb. Used the existing hood to measure and find it, wet spots from magic eraser removing marks for centering.

Don't want the Radion swimming

Finding correct height. I went with 9" which conveniently was the height of the level I was using.

For those that want a review. Right now at the start this thing is amazing, it is so freaking bright that I need to turn it down 1/2 as to not shock the corals. It is a new toy that has so many features it is just fun. But lets give it time to do it's thing, I need to program it's day cycle and find a nice color tone. It is so hard to photograph the actual color but in person it is pretty stunning.

Oh #### son, StevieT is a wooter. I myself have scored 3 bag of craps since April, pretty much all crap, a laser level would have been sweet. Tanks looking awfully sweet.

So the only option really is mounting aye?

As in like the ai SOL has those two screws, some was able to use L-brackets. I toyed with the idea of switching fixtures but no way of hanging lol

Radion Update 11.29.11

Days installed: 3

Current Power: 60% of max

I am still playing with the software and the effects I like. It is a little confusing when you click on a time that is at night it turns the light pretty high but in reality that is not the case when it runs for real. That is a silly bug in their system. Started running at 50% power up to 60% now.

You can set points in the day to do what you like. It winds up for a realistic morning sunrise then on to 10K bringing into 14K and all the way into 20K. You almost have to be home all day to enjoy this thing.

The software is "easy" enough to use but no real direction on it anywhere. I have no idea how to get it into natural mode so it runs on Artificial. There are questions I still have about certain aspects that should be addressed in direction. It is nice to have it hooked up so you can see what you are setting will look like when programmed.

I have a storm set at like 8pm so I can actually see it. MR clam will be pissed daily.

Largest benefit viewed so far is temperature. There is absolutely ZERO fluctuation of temperature in the water. The tank runs the same all day, all night which I have never seen even with the stock lights.

Things I like so far:

  • Light and pump talk to each other. Put in feed mode right from light
  • Temperature
  • Unlimited color options
  • Cool factor
  • Aesthetics
  • More power on the corals

Things I do not so far:

  • My learning curve of the software
  • I have a rimmed tank
  • Can not have random storms?
  • Should include a mounting kit, but that is an added cost
  • I have to wait for full power (acclimation)
  • I can not be home enough to watch it

More updates to come

Will not judge corals until acclimation is complete and power is up to 100%.

Thanks Stevie.

I saw somewhere it was explained that the algorithm for storms is very randomized so as to not have multiple storms in a single 24-hour cycle. So is there not an option in the software to enable the randomization of storm mode? Like with a check box/radio button?

From what i have heard natural mode is not available yet. For some reason they use that as a wow factor to sell the light but they havent released the natural mode to the software yet. Hopefully by the time I am ready to pick up 2 of these for my 120 gallon project natural mode will be good to go. Your tank is looking awesome as always steviet.

Not that I saw. You can pick a point in the day, one that is already there or a new one. It creates a circle. You then can manage that point.

While managing you can tell it what colors and then to the right you see clouds and storm. I would assume it will do a storm at that time every day.... maybe not?

Tank is nice.

Ghetto light Crimps, are ghetto...

Very Ghetto but dark enough around the tank you can't even tell. It's like you put a $750 light on your tank and cheeped out on the mounting, really!??!?!

I was just reading on their forum and you are correct. Which was super confusing because you read over the directions 5 times, install the light, read them over 2 more times in the bathroom, then go to program and are like where is that mode?

Here is my current mode. You can see the clouds and storm symbol at 7.56pm. I probably will be out tonight to see that so hard to prove.

No trying to scare you, or anything, Steve. However, having that light at 60% power on day 3 seems like WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY too much to me. You might wanna crank it down some.

Link to comment

I started at 50% and it didn't seem like enough... seemed like it was too dim and that it could be better.

Old light 150W MH with 4 32W T5s (actinic)

I don't know how that computes but the radion is what 250W equivalent?

What shoudl I do old timer sir?
