kinetic
Water Parameters: 12/06/07 Ammonia: 0ppm Nitrite: off the charts > 25ppm Nitrate: off the charts 12/07/07 Ammonia: 0ppm Nitrite: 0.1ppm Nitrate: off the charts Sweet! Two days from dosing 8ppm ammonia and the nitrites fall. I just dosed another 8ppm, so if my nitrites are 0ppm tomorrow, then my nitrite cycle is done! Probably not though, but I think only one more week of chemical dosing / cycling, and I'll be done with the nitrites. All that will be left will be to hookup the RDSB and wait for the nitrates to fall. I may help it out with a few water changes too if I get too impatient I just made a RDSB! I basically took a square 4 gallon bucket with lid I bought from usplastics.com, and drilled two holes on opposite sides. I found insert fitting bulkheads at my LFS today at 3/4", and a reducer. So I got all of that and I will be hooking up some pump that has a 1/2" outlet to it and dumping it out back into the tank, or maybe I'll hook it up inline with another phosphate reactor. I first drilled the holes for the 3/4" Bulkheads, then I took a dremel with a grinder and grinded flat the "ribs" that went where the bulkhead was. Once that was done, I just had to do some vinyl tubing for the intake. I need 1/2" vinyl tubing and some 3/4" to finish it off tomorrow. I'll probably hook it up to a MJ900 that I have to digup somewhere. This will start reducing my nitrates soon! Edited December 7, 2007 by kinetic Quote Link to comment
Uhuru
even your RDSB photos look nice LOL, I do like the square bucket more than the round ones though... Quote Link to comment

I like the square ones because you can use bulkheads rather than uniseals =/ If you bump the uniseal too hard, who knows, it might pop out =X Quote Link to comment
ezcompany
what is your Mg testing at? Quote Link to comment
kinetic
what is your Mg testing at? I don't have a Mg test kit yet. I'm ordering a bunch of stuff from ELOS next week, so I'm just going to wait. I doubt mg is low, there's nothing in the tank except rock and bacteria. Quote Link to comment
kinetic
just ordered another bucket of Reef Crystals and some Special Grade Arag-Alive sand from DrsFS. The reef crystals is on sale again and with only $10 shipping, it's a good deal. I can't believe I'm running out of salt already =/ I guess I needed a lot when I first filled my tank, but doing water changes on my 40g is taking a toll too. The sand will be used for my RDSB. It says it has nitrate reducing bacteria, which probably already in my tank, but why not kick start it some more since my tank is totally sterile. Quote Link to comment

kinetic
wooootI love those elos,,any updates soon?? soon? I just updated yesterday =) Nothing yet... I have to get my sand for my remote deep sand bed and filter floss as well. Plumb the RDSB. I'm also waiting on a quote from Giesemann for the Spectra. After that, I gotta hookup my Ca reactor and tune it nicely. That'll come much later. It's ok though, I'm waiting for my LFS to bring in a group of healthy Ventralis Anthias. The LFS worker is excellent when it comes to fish, they only get the healthiest batches. Quote Link to comment

kinetic
TOTALLY OFF TOPIC, but I want to keep you guys entertained while I'm waiting for my cycle. Between work and meetings, I managed to get out and shoot some photos today: River of Gold: Cups of Sun: Conifer Ginko: (strange artifacts around the conifer pines, crap) Ginko on Stone (meant to be abstract, I don't need to focus better =): Through Golden Veils: Palmy Red Balloon: Portraits: Great story - It was a stroke of luck that I met these two today in Golden Gate Park! Kat had come up and asked for directions, and we ended up talking a bit and decided to go do some portraits with Andy. This couple was a ton of fun to shoot! They were excited, motivated, relaxed, and bubbling with energy. The chemistry between these two is amazing. Looks like I have a few new models now! Hopefully I'll have a few more sessions with them in the Spring Time, AND in daytime. I hate shooting portraits at night =( Quote Link to comment

kinetic
http://socalireefs.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=1136 that the same people who built your stand??? yeah that's them, isn't it sad that they're stopping business? I guess my stand is now LE =) I'm glad I had them build me one last thing, and this time not selling it. Their work is absolutely amazing. Hands down the best acrylic work I've gotten ever before. I had three tanks made by them, including a small 5.5g nano. superb work. their woodwork was also totally amazing. Quote Link to comment
eddie29
I guess I'll have to look elsewhere for the stand. I'm sure there are many capable cabinet makers here in Kansas City. My parents really want my tank, so I'm looking at the Elso 120xl, so sexy. I have no one but you to blame for this. Quote Link to comment
kinetic
RDSB Now Online - [ 12/18/07 ] Hooked up my Remote Deep Sand Bed tonight, just put it inline after the phosphate reactor, I think this is the best way to keep the RDSB clean. My RDSB contains AragAlive Bahama OOLITE sand on the bottom, AragAlive Sugar Sized Sand on top, and then I still didn't have enough sand, so I dumped in some spare tahitian black moon sand on top, and mixed it in a bit, lol. They're all different sizes, so I wonder if that'll have a good or adverse effect. I used AragAlive because the store had them on sale for cheaper than the dry stuff =) I think it was the expiration date was coming up, but really, who cares. Maybe that'll add to my ammonia levels too! I'm excited. One problem is that the drain bulkhead leaks a tad. Just moistens up after a few hours around the thread... Tomorrow I may add a little teflon tape to that little bit of thread to see if it'll help. Did another quick water test: Ammonia: 0ppm Nitrite: 0ppm Nitrate: Off the charts ALK: 3.8ppm My ammonia and nitrites are totally undetectable now, my nitrates are off the charts (as expected still, I have no NNR mechanism at all up until now). The ALK is low, who the heck knows why. I just dosed 60ml of B-IONIC Alk part. I'll see if that dented it tomorrow. Ca is still as high as ever. I just dosed another 8ppm of Ammonia, so we'll see what my Ammonia and Nitrites are like tomorrow. Hopefully in 4 weeks my Nitrates will have gone down because of the RDSB. eddiet29
yeah those bulkheads are a bit annoying. What type did you get? THe ones that the nut is complete or the ones that have spaces between? I've found that the only realiable bulkheads are the ones that are a complete nut and not those with spaces between. If you have no idea what I mean, then you'r probably safe Quote Link to comment

kinetic
well last night I cranked the bulkhead down with a wrench, it still leaked, so I used teflon tape, then cranked it even more, and walla =) dry as the sahara desert I added in more ammonia, which bumped up my nitrites really high again =P No sign of the RDSB working within a day yet either on the nitrates Quote Link to comment

kinetic
The whole ELOS system. I visited ELOS website but it doesn't tell you how much each system costs. Thank you. Give Jesse an email, he'll get you a price quote: info@elosusa.com I bought the whole system minus the stand for a little over $3,000. The stand was then $500 shipped. I had to buy lights, chiller, vortechs, etc. as well on top of all of that. Quote Link to comment
