New Setup - Cycling Question

I just set up my 12g nanocube. I've got a koralia nano for circulation (plus the bult in pump).

To start the cycling I've got ~8 lbs of live rock (to start with) and live sand.

My question is about the bio ball and ceramic rings that came with the aquarium. The local fish store told me to take them out because I didn't need them since I've got sufficient live rock. I just wanted to check with others if I should really leave the balls and rings out or if I should put them in?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Nanocustoms 3.6 LED on Nanocube 12 OG

I have been wanting to upgrade the lighting in my Nanocube 12G ever since I got the tank from the seller last year. The tank currently has a CurrentUSA Single Satellite 40W light on it. When I saw the tank from the seller I was surprised to see he had a clam in their. It just didn't seem to have enough light but he did put it close to the top so I guess the clam is surviving. I think a lighting upgrade will help him look a lot better. A rework of the tank is in order after the new LED lights are in place.

The decision to go with LED over metal halide was an easy one for me. It was an even easier decision when I found out Nanotuners.com had a LED retrofit kit for them. The whole drilling/tapping of the heatsink and soldering work was what put me off from tackling a LED project. This kit took care of these two for me and they did a great job at it.

Unfortunately I did not realize the kit was meant for the Nanocube DX model and I found out mine is the older generation model. I got the kit a couple of weeks ago and of course the heat sink holes did not work for my OG canopy. Luckily I was able to find a solution to the heatsink mount as well as a new splashguard.

I got everything working and hope to have pictures up soon. The only problem I have was one of the Silenx fan I ordered did not work. I'm going to need to send it back and get another one. I'm running one Silenx fan and one stock fan right now and the Silenx fan is definitely quieter. My wife will hate the noise from the stock fan so I'm going to have to get that other Silenx fan exchange fast!

Hope this will help other who have the older generation NC to consider this LED kit for their lighting upgrade because I think it is a winner!

One last thing, I have to thank Nick from Nanotuners for all of his help thus far.

Cheers,

-Alex

Anybody own a longnose Hawkfish? How does it get along?

I am looking a few for interesting fish to plan a 29 gallon standard sized tank. Colors and interesting swima ctivity are keys to my choice. I'm thinking a Yellow Wrasse b/c of their constant swimming and motion is a good choice - and probably a clown to swim around the front of tank - and wondering if a Longnose Hawkfish would fit in that aquarium setup well?

* Do they swim around alot?
* How are they with other fish
* Do they bother your shrimp? ( Thinking a cleaner shrimp would be a good tankmate )
* Any problems with snails or other fish that these harrass - and are they visible quite a bit in the tank.
* Are they difficult to feed?
* Any reservations to adding a Longnose Hawkfish that I should be aware of?

I'll have some Live Rock - Sump and corals ( will work on these selectiosn later )

Thanks

Red Sea Berlin Skimmer Turbo upgrade kit- new

After many unsuccessful years in this hobby, I have shut down my tanks and will take a break.
That being said, I have a brand new Red Sea Berlin turbo upgrade kit that I would like to sell if anyone is interested. At the time it paid over a $100 but there are better deals out there now. I would like to get $35 plus shipping if possible. Just so you can get an idea of shipping cost via UPS, my zip is 10307 and it weighs about 4-5 pounds. (I am at work and don’t’ have the item with me.) The box is approx 10”x10” x 8”. Once I get home I’ll put the real weight and box size, but this will help you decide if it’s worth shipping to you. I could use the USPS $10 flat rate box for this as it will definitely fit, but I have had a few close calls with the post office when shipping before, so the choice would be yours.

If your interested, PM me and I’ll answer you in the order I receive them. Please be patient this weekend as I have furniture deliveries etc coming Saturday and may not be able to get online until Sunday.

I have other items that I will be posting as well shortly. Thanks, Guy

Question about sand when moving a tank

Hello, let me just say first I'm not asking how to move my tank, just a particular question about the sand I'll be using when I set it back up.

I'm about to move my 12g nano from my home in VA back to my school in NY. I had purchased a 20lb back of black tahitian moon sand from DF&S and had been using that. When I first moved the tank from NY to VA, what I did was just throw out the sand in the tank and use the leftover sand I had from before (I used about half and saved half). This worked out fine since the sand was not live (it was dry).

Now, I ordered what I thought was the same sand from DF&S since I'm now out. Little did I know it's no longer the same stuff...

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod...fm?pcatid=21432

I'm not sure this if this live or not but its certainly not dry and the bag says it contains buffers and "helpful bacteria" () which are contained in packets I would cut and pour in... Is this safe for me to use in my tank when I reset it up? I assume if it is I would not use the packets of buffer/bacteria
