Yellowtail Damsel
Scientific Name
Chrysiptera parasema
Common Names
Goldtail Demoiselle, Yellowtail Blue Damsel
Average Size
1-2 inches (Max-3 inches)
Region
Indo-Pacific
Tank Size
5 gallons and above
Aggressiveness
Moderate, one of the most peaceful damsels, they can be aggressive if a territory is established. Add this fish as one of the last ones in the tank or add in odd groups.
Current
Any, very adaptable
Hardiness
Great fish for beginners. Adapts to a wide variety of water conditions and tanks.
Behavior
Can be kept singly or in groups but a dominant individual will form. If kept in groups, aggressiveness will be much less to other fish. They tend to stay amongst the rocks and corals. They will choose a part of the tank where they will spend most of their time. When established, they will come out for food and be very social.
Feeding
Will eat anything and is very adaptable. Frozen, flakes, pellets, and other omnivorous foods need to be fed to keep the great coloration. Feed at least once daily because they are very active.
Description
The Yellowtail Damsel has a neon blue body and a yellow tail. The tips of the fins can be transparent or light blue/black. Two black stripes cross the eyes and mouth area. In different spectrums of light, this fish can seem to have a purple coloration. Some egg laying has been observed but hatching and rearing of fry has not been documented yet.
Notes
Do not use this fish to cycle aquariums! In the past (and sometimes recently), these fish were used to start the nitrogen cycle. Let the tank cycle naturally with liverock/livesand to prevent a fish death.
