Scientific Name
Blastomussa wellsi

Region
Red Sea to Central Pacific regions

Lighting
Low to Moderate (does not like direct metal halide lighting and should be placed low and perhaps to the side of the aquarium)

Current
Low to Moderate (seems to expand much fuller in low current conditions)

Aggressiveness
Minimal, can placed in close proximity of other like corals with no damage being done but should be placed well away from very aggressive corals (i.e. hammer, frogspawn, galaxia)

Hardiness
Very hardy, excellent beginners coral once water parameters are stable and calcium levels are up to par. This coral does appreciate the addition of iodine/iodide.

Placement
Low in the tank, preferably on the substrate and well away from any aggressive species that may sting it.

Blastomussa coral can be found in a wide array of exotic colors and have grown in popularity in recent years. They are a fairly rare coral, and as such tend to be expensive. This coral is often confused with mushrooms as it looks very similar when open. When retracted the skeletal structure can be seen. Blastomussa wellsi develops much larger corallites than does Blastomussa merletti.
