Florida Ricordea
Scientific Name
Ricordea florida
Common Name
Florida Ricordea
Region
Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean
Lighting & Placement
Moderate lighting. If you notice your ricordea are 'cupping' or bending in a convex shape, they are not receiving sufficient lighting. If the ricordea are remaining small or 'shrunken' and not expanding, they are likely being exposed to an excess of light, causing photoinhibition (easy to do with this species).
Temperament
Benign, but do not place near more aggressive corals.
Current
Low. High flow laminar or turbulent water flow will keep ricordeas from opening fully, and possibly cause tissue damage
Hardiness
Very hardy, an excellent beginner coral.
Notes
Florida ricordea will grow and multiply rapidly in favorable conditions. A few ricordea can turn into a few dozen in a year! Ricordea are found in many colors (orange, yellow, blue, and pink to name a few), are very hardy, and are beautiful additions to any soft coral or LPS nano reef. Ricordea florida and Ricordea yuma are sometimes confused, but the Florida ricordea is a smaller polyp (2-7cm) than the ricordea yuma (6-16cm across).
